Sarir Project to Support Food Security

‘We focus on livestock production and fodder provision to enhance food security in Libya through sustainable methods.’

Sarir agricultural production project was established in 1973 in the heart of the Libyan desert, embodying a pioneering model for investing in natural resources and achieving sustainable agricultural development. The project aims to reclaim vast areas of desert land and transform them into productive green agricultural areas through the use of modern irrigation technologies.

The project focuses on cultivating cereal crops such as wheat and barley, along with fodder and some vegetables and legumes during the winter season. Summer production includes fodder crops such as corn, Oat and alfalfa.

The project's activities extend to animal production, where sheep, goats and camels are raised, achieving balanced agricultural integration and contributing to food security.

The agricultural circles created by center-pivot irrigation systems, which spray water in a regular circular pattern, appear a vibrant green against desert or arid landscapes, creating a striking contrast that is easy to spot. Their diameters are large, ranging from 500 to 1000 meters, making them readily detectable by satellites.
